New Visor Card Assists Police-Deaf Communications

    By Dean DeRusso, Systems Advocate

This will be an interesting year for the deaf and hard of hearing community and the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), thanks to the Deaf Driver's Communication Visor Card. This new tool will help improve communication between the deaf community and police. The Regional Center for Independent Living (RCIL) and the Rochester Police Department established the Deaf and Police Interaction Committee to create the visor card, which helps to eliminate a host of problems that currently exist when a deaf person is pulled over for a traffic violation.

    Advocacy Across New York

The Regional Center for Independent Living (RCIL) understands the problems and barriers that affect people with disabilities. As a member of the Statewide Systems Advocacy Network (SSAN), RCIL disability advocates with a way to help organize and generate systems change.
